We all have a past, but some person’s past is more painful than others. Your situation does not define who you are so you should never allow your situation to define you. So you had a bad past, does that make you a bad person? Well, it does not have to, only if you allow it to.

Two mistake persons often make who have been the victim of a hurtful past is to associate themselves with the situation (something bad happened to me so I must be a bad person) and to associate everyone close to them with that bad situation (if I get too close to this person now, the same thing may happen to me again).

With this being said, if you want to overcome your past, you are going to have to learn how to overcome fear by taking risks. Here are a few pointers to assist you on your journey.

1. Learn to separate the truth from the reality. The truth is you were betrayed or done wrong etc. by an individual or individuals, but the reality is everyone is not the same, there are still genuine people out there.

2. Replace negativity with positivity. Not everyone wants to use you, so instead of focusing on those who are in it for what they can get, focus on those who are unselfish. Let them be your driving force.

3. Keep your past in the past by not allowing memories to taunt and to control your actions. Take charge and be willing to take risks. You will not know until you try and find out. Develop courage.

4. Value yourself so others will value you. If you look down on yourself, chances are others may not see why they should look up to you. But on the contrary, when people can see you go through things and you still hold your head high as you take life by the horn, respect will be automatic.

5. Last, but certainly not least, trust God with your life. If He brought it to you, He will bring you through it. Testing’s and trials can bring out the best in you if you allow it. Situations can make you either bitter or better. It can make you weaker or stronger. I love the latter part because I have seen persons looking better, stronger, wiser and more confident than ever, after going through. These changes would never be produced without the valuable lessons that life has to offer.

There is a scripture verse in Romans chapter eight which says, “God will work all things together for good to those who love God”. Did you hear that? ALL things.

The choice is yours. You can continue on the path of working effortlessly to protect yourself from the pain of your past by allowing your past to dictate your future, or you can take a bold step and let go off your past while trusting God with your life, knowing that better is ahead. Do not allow your past to ruin your future. Take the necessary steps and unlock a new personality and a brighter future. Until next time do remember, with God, you can make it. All you have to do is to believe.
